In praise of idleness

Idleness finds meaning when spent in quiet contemplation of events, situations that has caused you to be idle in the first place. When you slow down to freeze a drop of water and catch the moment of transformation from from its tear drop shape to a sphere….after which it falls to the ground and becomes nothing more than just a wet patch. If you can wait long enough- watch a man long enough to seize the exact moment before he chooses between right and wrong. If you can meet him there. How startled will he be! What position will you take then? Will you impose a moral choice or encourage a ‘natural right’ in him to fulfill his urge? “Look at the flowers in the field..” Jesus says, “they neither toil nor strive but not even Solomon in all his splendor was never clothed as beautifully as them..”. this of course does not volley for idleness but is actually the’key’ to happy living. To let go of worry – the chosen companion of all those who fear to be happy!! It is wise to plan for tomorrow – to be prepared is the mark of every successful individual but yet to know when to loosen ourselves from our self-imposed restrictions is wiser. Plans tend to consume all those who try to control situations, environment and (mercy) change, in the name of completing the ‘task’. As I sit here racking my limited collection of greedily accumulated vocabulary over my short existence, the most vibrant butterfly merrily (as it appears) flutters past me. Its path unknown and erratic. I pause my seemingly constructive thoughts to savor the sight- for I will not chance upon it again. How many times have we been so caught up in work, grief, frivolous day dream or more work that we have failed to see, to seize such beauty before us? How many times have we failed to notice a kind gesture, a sacrifice made by a friend – when we have were so wrapped inourselves. How many times have we failed to appreciate those who love us? Why do we try to align this universe when we cannot control even a pimple from popping out before a big event..let alone turn a single gray hair black! Carpe Diem! – seize the day! It is just more than a Hollywood styled scene (with back ground music) when the under dog rises to the occasion and does something utterly in applicable to reality. It is the courage to venture out from the fortress one has built around and face ones fears. The cocoon of escapism one has crawled into (and escapism here could also mean dogged pursuance of ones dreams! which is legit but then this is another discussion all together). The fear of disapproval when you are bound by responsibility, duty, tradition and code of conduct spelled by society as such. Carpe Diem! dare to stop this fear. Dare to stop wallowing in self pity or even real pain and SEIZE the chance of Joy our Father gives us! Jesus says “O ye of little faith..Do not worry!” instead LIVE enjoy the little pleasures of rain on a hot day, a glass of cold water when thirsty, a burst of yellow flowers on a dusty day, your friend’s voice asking you whats the matter when hurt, a funny text, a very good conversation with someone dear, finding parking space on a crowded market, your dog greeting you welcome, yummy dinner, knowledge that you have a crush on someone or just a lazy sunday spent in complete idleness sitting on your favorite chair penning your thoughts…
